Overview

The walk starts in Llantrisant Forest car park near Ynysmaerdy, now called the Coed Garthmaelwyg car park.

We follow a track uphill through the woods until we reach the Cariad Stones before returning through fields and the woods. If the weather is clear there should be good views over the Bristol Channel.

Walk specific information: The path from the car park becomes stony and uneven, and might be wet, so boots and sticks are recommended. There are a few stiles. Depending on the weather it can be windy on the Ridgeway near the Cariad Stones so suitable clothing should be carried in case of strong winds.

Note that the car park name has changed for some reason, it's now called Coed Garthmaelwyg. Parking is limited as dog walkers and mountain bikers use the car park so please car share if possible. OS Grid Ref: ST 025 847. What 3 words: raven.bother.writings To find the car park, if travelling north from Cowbridge, after Pontyclun go past Leekes Department Store (on your right), then turn left at the T junction traffic lights. You then come to a roundabout, take the 2nd exit, into a new housing estate built on the old Lanelay Hall Fire Brigade HQ grounds. Follow the road round to the right around the housing estate and then uphill on windy Lanelay Lane through the forest for 1.5 miles until you see the Coed Garthmaelwyg Car Park on your left. It is signed just after a sharp right hand bend and dip. If you put "Smaelog Woods" into Google maps it should give you directions.
