An exhilarating and very scenic walk to the summit of the Long Mynd with its extensive views far across towards Wales and across the Midlands. We walk up the beautiful scenic valley of Ashes Hollow with its tumbling stream, which is much quieter than the popular ascent via Cardington Mill Valley. The descent, across moorland and the top of the ancient Cross Dyke, and the path above Callow Holllow and Small Batch, has a some of the best hill views in Shropshire looking across towards Caer Caradoc and Ragleth Hills and down into the deep steep valleys on either side known in Shropshire as Batches.
This is a hill walk. The ascent is mostly up a gently climbing slope with some shorter steeper sections. The walk includes a ford across a shallow stream at the end, and an awkward stepping stones crossing across a stream in a narrow rocky valley near the start. There is a steep descent down a path which can be skiddy in places if wet and there may be a couple of muddy sections of path after rain, so poles and decent waterproof boots are recommended. Please bring a snack and packed lunch. Car share leaving from Telford at 9.30am is advised as parking is very limited in Little Stretton and in the parking area by the stream in the narrow lane below Ashes Hollow, (unless you intend to be a customer at the Ragleth Arms after the walk, in which case you may be able to use their customer car park.)
