A mainly shady walk through some surprisingly wild Wealden woodland. Leaving Horsham eastwards into lovely St Leonard's Forest trails then lead on to a string of hammer ponds, dense woods and eventually to Slaugham village and Nymans gardens for a tea break.
Those continuing on the longer option will see some of the tallest redwoods in England and some of the biggest houses before finishing the walk at Balcombe Station.
Mainly good trails but some short sharp ups and downs. Few stiles until after Nymans.
Please bring water and a snack lunch as the refreshment stops are towards the end of the walk.
This is a walk that can be shortened at Nymans Gardens (National Trust) for a proper look around one of the finest gardens in southern England (£). You will need to catch the 273 bus back to Brighton independently (50 minutes) or arrange a lift/taxi for this option.
Leader will continue on to Balcombe station- about another hour's walking after a short tea break at Nymans. National Trust members get free entry.
Leader arriving 9:57 from Brighton at Horsham. Hove and West walkers may find it easier to travel independently by train, skipping Brighton , changing at Gatwick or Three Bridges.
