Overview

15km (9.3m). 400m ascent, approx. 6 hours. We start at Gladstone Reservoir, south of Penicuik (NT 291 528) with a flat walk then ascending to Torfichen Hill and Mauldslie Hill. There is a long stretch of open moorland followed by a descent round the Kipps finishing with a flat walk along the River South Esk. There are paths and tracks throughout although some will be boggy, especially after rain.

Directions to the start are via M8 to Hermiston roundabout, taking 3rd exit then on to A720.Exit at Lothianburn junction. At roundabout take 2nd exit to A702, then A703, then A 701. Follow signs for Penicuik. Go through Penicuik and follow Peebles signs on A703. Approx 9km (5.5m) after Penicuik, turn left for Gladhouse Reservoir signed Temple/Gorebridge. After another 5km (3m) turn right signed for a farm and saying ‘no access to reservoir’ but this is the correct way. Very shortly go over a bridge and there is a walkers car park on the left. It is quite small so would be good to minimise the number of cars.
