An undulating circular walk from the village of Norton St. Philip across fields and along lanes with views of Salisbury Plain and the Stourhead Estates. The George Inn in the village is reputed to be the oldest pub in the country with a licence going back to 1397, certainly a good place for refreshments at the end of the walk. However, bring drinks and lunch for brief refreshment stops during the walk.
The walk heads out of Norton St. Philip by way of a bridleway called Watery Lane, an apt name! The walk continues across fields to Charlton Farm and Chickwell New farm where there are views across vast swathes of the local landscape. At Tucker's Grave Inn, we cross the A366 and continue along a lane to the hamlet of Hassage, through fields to the farmstead of Upper Baggridge, and then down a stony track to Wellow Lane which takes us back to Norton St. Philip. Waterproof boots and poles recommended as Watery Lane is rocky and can be a shallow stream at certain times of year.
