Overview

Hello Everyone

We make a welcome return to Oakamoor near Cheadle this Sunday for one of walk leader John's favourite routes taking in lovely woodlands, open pastures, and short riverside sections. This walk is graded as Moderate with one 200 yard sharp ascent, part of which has a staircase (photo), a couple of long but gradual climbs, and a forested descent towards the end where poles may come in handy. There's also some road walking on quiet lanes. Approximately a dozen stiles.

Jump in and join us if you like. We're friendly! Perhaps drop us a line if this is your first time with ourselves so that we can look out for you at the start. Thanks.

Registration: 09.45. Walk start: 10.00. Walk leader: John S. (07575 266680)

⚠️🅿️The start car park can get busy. Alternative parking is detailed below.

Toilets are available at the start. None on the walk itself.

Post walk refreshment venue to be decided upon. Somewhere local for sure.

Directions. Primarily for our own members or anyone arriving via Cheadle. Satnav using what3words recommended, but beware of any route bringing you in via Alton and the single track Red Road from there to Oakamoor.

From Hednesford take the A460 to Rugeley where turn left at the Miners Island, still A460, and proceed to pick up the A51 direction Stone. Continue on the A51 for 8 miles via Weston to Sandon where turn right onto the B5066, direction Hilderstone*. Follow the road for 2 miles to reach the crossroads with the B5027 where straight across and down into Hilderstone.

Ignore the left turn for the B5066 and follow the course of the road through the village, direction Cresswell. After 3.5 miles go over the level crossing, then under the new A50 to reach the T-junction with the old A50. Turn right here signed for Uttoxeter, then 450 yards later (immediately before Villa Verde Italian restaurant) turn left, with care, direction Cheadle.

Continue for 2 miles until the junction with the A521. Turn right and proceed for 0.7 mile into Cheadle town centre and merge into the one-way system along the High Street. At the end of this turn right, then immediately left onto the B5417 signed for Oakamoor.

Follow the B5417 for 3 rather twisty miles to eventually drop down the steep hill into Oakamoor passing the church on your left. At this point indicate right and make the acute right turn (with care) into Mill Road at the foot of the hill. In Mill Road proceed for 150 yards where turn left into the start car park. ⚠️Height restriction. Final approaches OS map and photos above to aid you.

If this car park if full continue down Mill Road for a further 100 yards and turn left immediately opposite the restored signal box into the entrance road for the overflow car park located on the site of the former Oakamoor railway station. We'll endeavour to place at least one of our own vehicles in here and walk back to the start proper with any other members and guests.

⚠️*For your information there's a cycle ride with Bradley Wiggins taking place at Sandon Hall which may hold you up for a short while after you turn onto the B5066 Hilderstone road. The ride turns left into the lanes a mile after leaving Sandon so any delay should be short lived.
