Hello Everyone
We're heading out west this Sunday, or more precisely out to Pontesbury approximately nine miles southwest of Shrewsbury for a fine walk taking in the fabulous upland countryside hereabouts with views to match. Lumpy terrain warranting a Strenuous tag for the ascent of Earl's Hill early on, but more Moderate thereafter. Poles recommended if you have them as the above mentioned bonk has some gravel patches on the path down. Five stiles only.
As always you're welcome to join us for a day out. Drop us a line if this is your first time with Chase Ramblers please. 👍Ta very much.
Registration: 09.45. Walk start: 10.00. Walk leader: Roy (07761 823977)
No facilities at the actual start itself but there is a small toilet block in Pontesbury village indicated in the photos above. Or perhaps call into the Esso services located just off the A5/A49 island south of Shrewsbury. The loo's are in the petrol station building.
🅿️⚠️Be aware that Polesgate car park is relatively small and block parking may be necessary.
Post walk refreshments venue to be decided once we're all done. Somewhere local for sure. It'd be rude not to!
Directions. Primarily for our own members but good for everyone once you're on the A488 for Pontesbury.
The start is located approximately 9 miles south-west of Shrewsbury via the A488 from the A5 Shrewsbury bypass.
From your home location pick up the either the A460 or A449 direction Wolverhampton to join the M54 westbound at either Junction 1 or Junction 2, or the A5 westbound, direction Telford, to join the M54 later on at Junction 3 via the A41 after Weston-under-Lizard.
Proceed on the M54 merging onto the A5 towards Shrewsbury. At the first island on the A5 follow the course of the road to the left, and then at the next two islands straight over, still A5, direction North Wales. There are services at the latter island which intersects the A49.
From the services island proceed along the A5 for a further 4 miles. At the next (i.e. fourth) island turn left off the A5 onto the A488 signed for Bishops Castle and continue for 5 miles to enter Pontesford / Pontesbury. Follow the narrow one-way system through the village and around the double bend opposite the church, still A488. As the road straightens out take the left turn 50 yards later signed for Pontesbury Hill (photo above) and follow the course of this narrow road uphill for 0.9 mile to reach the parking area at the very end just after passing the enclosed Severn Trent reservoir on your right.
⚠️Parking is limited and we may have to squeeze in tightly. Car sharing therefore very much recommended if you can. Thank you.
