Walk mainly follows the Pontypridd Circular Walk, but to make it shorter, after climbing from Glyn Taff heads down towards Park Ynysangharad and follows a level route back to Barry sidings.
The walk starts with a fairly long, but not too steep, climb through conifer woodland on gravelled forestry track. Some lovely waterfalls. Leaving the forestry we pick up an access track, then road for a short distance before going into woods. Cross a small stream and up to a picnic spot for an early tea break.
A back lane to Graig above Ponty and some pavement to pick up a path along the side of the valley. Left and down quite steeply next to the university and into Treforest to cross the valley (pavements). A little way along the Taff Trail and up along a track with Glyn Taff Cemetary either side. A short steep grassy climb, some level walking and a steep road (not too far).
We now leave the Ponty O and things start to get tricky. A hop over a stream is shortly followed by a marshy area (I went from tussock to tussock, the cows had a good laugh). Gaiters and Well oiled boots recommended. Leaving the field the line of the path is fairly clear, but it is overgrown and you will be pushing past ferns, brambles and bracken. The path leaves woods and enters a horse field. The gateway to the road is muddy. Leaving the road we take some attractive but very uneven stone steps down. Crossing the A470 we take the Taff Trail to Park Ynysangharad. Cross the river and over to the rugby club to pick up a riverside path. Some pavement and then a level tramway back to Barry Sidings.
