Rothbury
Walk details:
A moderate, 8.5 mile walk beginning at Cowhaugh Car Park. The route begins with a gentle 2.5 mile walk west along the river Coquet , with great views of the Simonside hills, towards the edge of Thropton. We then make our way north east, steadily upwards for 1.5 miles, enjoying the views as we head to our lunch stop near the carriage drive designed by Lord Armstrong for his guests. After lunch we continue north east for approx. 1.5 miles before turning to make our way back to Rothbury, again enjoying more views. The route has a mixture of riverside walking, moorland and woodland (for shade) on mainly good tracks, but I would advise sticks if you use them, and stout boots, as the higher sections can be a little uneven underfoot. Don't forget to put your sunscreen on and bring plenty of water, and a hat.
The option of a shorter walk of approx. 5.7 miles will also be available.
Directions: From Chester le Street, take the A1M and then the A1 north for approximately 24 miles and exit at the A697 to Coldstream. After 7 miles turn left on to the B6344 towards Rothbury. Next, turn left on to the B6341 after 5.7 miles. After approx. 500 yards, turn left on to the B6342, Bridge Street. Cross the bridge and turn right on to Whitton Bank Road. Cowhaugh car park is on your right after approx. 150 yards.
