Join me on my favourite “lockdown” walk.
Close to the heart of Motherwell, yet a world apart, Dalzell Estate and Baron’s Haugh is the perfect place to enjoy nature and history side by side. We take a walk through the Japanese Garden, pass the Covenanters’ Oak and then onto Dalzell House that was originally built in the 15th century by the Dalzell family. Later in the walk we reach St Patrick’s Well and Graveyard. All this while enjoying walking through wooded areas and along by the River Clyde. Towards the end of the walk we have great views over the Haugh and to South Lanarkshire from a new path.
Walk leaders Wilma Stewart Janice Donaldson and Janice Whitefield.
Terrain is varied. It could be muddy. Paths are stoney with exposed tree roots. There are some steps and some gentle inclines.
Meet at Baron’s Haugh Car Park at 10.15 ready to start at 10.30. Walk should be finished by 1.00.
There are no toilets. There is a cafe on Manse Road and at Asda.
Boots and poles are recommended.
After leaving the car park walk straight across the access road. Follow the path until another road is reached. Walk straight across and take first right into the Japanese Garden. At the other end turn left. Walk past the Covenanters’ Oak turn left at Dalzell House. Turn right and walk along the side of the house. Take first right and follow the path to cross Dalzell Burn. Once we reach River Clyde turn right. Walk alongside the river and take first right. Once the little arched bridge is reached cross it and take first left past St Patrick’ well. Turn right up a gentle incline and turn left at the gate. Continue walking and turn second right up a gentle incline and turn first right onto a new path. At the end of this path turn left and continue walking till the car park is reached.
