Overview

This walk is for up to 25 people, including the leader.

This is a lengthy but fairly flat route in the very south of Cambridgeshire, visiting the quaint villages of Litlington, Bassingbourn, Abington Piggotts and Steeple Morden, and the surrounding farmland.

We will start our walk from just outside Ashwell & Morden station and bypass Station Quarry consisting of New Pit White Chalk dating back to as far back as the Cretaceous period. Then we will reach the village of Litlington, which boasts numerous 16th and 17th century timber-framed and thatched cottages.

We will then cross over to the village of Bassingbourn, one of two villages in the parish of Bassingbourn-cum-Kneesworth, situated close to Bassingbourn Barracks which was used as an RAF airfield during the Second World War. We will ramble through Ford Wood before having a short break at the recreation ground.

We will continue through Bassingbourn, passing more thatched cottages, then cross farmland to reach the small village of Abington Piggotts. We will have our lunch stop beside St Michael’s Church which dates back to the 14th century.

Our next stretch of the walk offers some nice countryside views as we make our way to Steeple Morden. We will cross some historic farmland with sheep grazing before reaching the village pub The Waggon & Horses, where you can join us for a drink. However, Steeple Morden’s Church of St. Peter & St. Paul lies just across the road, which you are welcome to visit if you don’t wish to visit the pub.

On our final stretch of the walk we can enjoy a spectacular view of the surrounding countryside overlooking some of the villages we’ve walked through, as well as Therfield Heath in the distance. We end by passing the woodlands of Morden Grange Plantation and the Station Quarry again before we return to Ashwell & Morden Station.

Dogs are welcome on a lead.

For information about walking with the group, including our dog policy, please visit the Stag Walkers website.

Booking your place: Please book your place using the free Meetup website/app. Join the Stag Walkers Meetup group and click the 'Attend' button on the event page.

Please do not turn up for a walk without booking, as places are limited.

If the walk is fully booked, click 'join waitlist' to get a place if one becomes available and please check back regularly as you will likely get a place. The waitlist gives priority to single bookings so if you wish to bring a guest, we recommend booking separately.

Unless you opt in to further communications, we will only use contact information you provide to get in touch about the walk.
