This walk is for up to 20 people, including the leader.
This is a short afternoon walk with a mixture of urban walking, footpaths and countryside views.
Starting off with some urban walking we will go past the fictional HMP Slade Prison where the opening credits for 1970s sitcom Porridge were filmed. We will then join the Alban Way, which is a great walking and cycling route joining St Albans to Hatfield along the former railway line. This part of our route is easy to walk, mainly flat and even surfaces, and lined with trees for much of the way.
En route, various buildings associated with the railway can be seen, and a glimpse of Hatfield Road Cemetery - a resting place for 30,000 deceased people since 1884. Continuing on the Alban Way, we go past Fleetville, where colour printing business Fleet Works was set up in the late 1800s with links to London’s Fleet Street.
We can stop for a snack in Highfield Park (please bring food & drinks / water).
Going towards the hamlet of Tyttenhanger we will pass through countryside and open fields (where paths may be more uneven). We may hope to see some speckled wood butterflies which might be about at this time of year.
The way back will be a mixture of pavement walking and joining the Alban Way again before returning to our starting point. At the end, there will be optional visits to the Crown Pub, or Clarence Park to get ice creams.
Dogs are welcome on a lead.

Please:
DO NOT book onto a walk unless you are pretty sure you will be able to make it.
UPDATE YOUR RSVP. We understand ‘life happens’ so if you need to change your RSVP please do this at least 24 hours before the walk and before booking closes to enable someone else to take your place.
DON’T NO-SHOW on the day unless it is absolutely unavoidable (we do understand ‘life happens’) because it prevents others from enjoying a walk if it is fully booked.
*TAKE NOTE that if you no-show and/or cancel after the booking closing deadline three times, without extenuating circumstances, we will decline further bookings from you for a period of six weeks.*
Bring a packed lunch/snacks and drinks, appropriate clothing for the conditions and optionally a basic first aid kit & hand sanitiser.
