This walk takes us out from the village of Chilton cutting through the science park at Harwell and onto Hungerford Road. We follow this old packhorse track to Steventon, passing the site of the old Esso research centre. On Steventon Hill, we should get some views over the Oxfordshire countryside. We will then walk the length of the Causeway to St Michaels and All Angels Church at the western end passing many interesting buildings lining the road on the way. Following the Vale Way for a short time, we then head up hill towards East Hendred, a typical downland village with a small museum. From here we leave areas of habitation and use tracks to Aldfield Common where we travel round the perimeter of the science park and back into Chilton.
The walk is mainly in the open so be aware of the prevailing weather.
If flooding in the area persists, an alternative walk will be provided from the same start time and point *
* update 17/3/24 " there will be the alternative walk as the fields out of Steventon are still flooded today Friday 15th and I doubt they will have receded by then due to even more rain falling and there is no other way unless we double back on a 2 mile stretch. The alternative walk from the same place and time will go to Upton, West Hagbourne,Harwell village then round Harwell science park and back to Chilton. It will be muddy in places and will not pass the farm shop."
