This B+ Strenuous walk of 7.75 miles and approx 2000 feet of ascent starts from the Old Bowling Green Carpark. We start with an ascent of Black and Green Hills although this is basically one climb. We head on over to Stood Hill where it flattens out and then drops down to Willowgrain Hill which is short and steep and then goes up a similar fashion. We then head over to meet up with the SUW and descend to Cogshead where we will have lunch. After that there is some gentle climbing and descending to the road back into the village and the cars.
The walk is mainly on grassy tracks and open moorland which isn't bad. If it has been wet in the week preceeding the walk then i'd reccomend wearing gaiters as some parts can be a bit wet. Also poles are helpful on the first part of the walk up to Stood Hill and also on Willowgrain.
If the weather is kind we will get great views of the surrounding Lowther Hills.
Driving instructions. Head to Hurlford and take the B7073 to meet up with the A76. Take this down through Sanquhar and Mennock and after leaving Mennock, take the left hand turning on the B797 to Wanlockhead. the car park is approx 6.7 miles from the turn off.
