We begin our walk from the convenient car park in Crickhowell, setting off with a short stretch along the road before the real adventure begins. The route soon leads us onto a steep but rewarding climb towards the iconic Table Mountain, also known as Crug Hywel. This ascent is just under 2 miles and gains over 1,100 feet in elevation, so we’ll take it at a steady pace with plenty of opportunities to pause and soak in the surroundings.
On a clear day, the effort is more than worth it – expect breathtaking panoramic views over the Usk Valley, Black Mountains, and beyond. Once we’ve reached the summit and caught our breath, the remainder of the walk is gentler and more relaxed, as we descend gradually through open moorland and farmland paths, making our way back into Crickhowell.
We’ll finish with the option of some well-earned refreshments at The Bear Inn, a historic and welcoming spot to round off a brilliant day’s walking.
