This walk is for up to 30 people, including the leader.
A rural walk through the quiet countryside of East Hertfordshire to the home of Baron Brewing at Brick House Farm. This walk forms part of our occasional series of ‘Taproom Treks’ visiting brewery taprooms. The route is through gently rolling arable farmland, along tree-lined paths and past some grand houses.
We begin in the small town of Buntingford, walking down its historic High Street then past some pretty cottages and alongside the little River Rib. On our way out of town we’ll pass the former Buntingford railway station before following a winding country lane up to Owles Hall. This is the first of several large country houses on our route. We’ll next pass Alswick Hall, a restored Tudor manor house which was regularly visited by Elizabeth I.
We then take field-edge paths to the hamlet of Hare Street, before our route takes us through the grounds of Great Hormead Bury. We’ll pause in the small village of Great Hormead for a snack or early lunch.
Leaving the village, we follow the course of a stream named the Black Ditch, bringing us to Brick House Farm - named after an unusual three-storeyed farmhouse thought to date from the 16th century. Here we’ll visit the Baron Brewing taproom for up to roughly an hour, giving us a chance to try their modern beers and perhaps buy some food (there is often a visiting food truck, which will be confirmed nearer to the date of the walk). The taproom has seating both indoors and outside.
After our taproom visit we’ll head back towards Buntingford, first along a quiet country lane then in and out of the valley of the River Quin. Next we’ll loop past Beauchamps, a country house believed to date from 1653, complete with a historic moat. Finally we pass the former St Bartholomew’s church, a ruin for many years and now converted to a private residence, before returning into Buntingford.
Near the end of the walk there is the option of a further drinks stop at The Fox & Duck pub, two minutes’ walk away from our start/end point.
Dogs are welcome on a lead.

Booking your place: Please book your place using the free Meetup website/app. Join the Stag Walkers Meetup group and click the 'Attend' button on the event page.
Please do not turn up for a walk without booking, as places are limited.
If the walk is fully booked, click 'join waitlist' to get a place if one becomes available and please check back regularly as you will likely get a place. The waitlist gives priority to single bookings so if you wish to bring a guest, we recommend booking separately.
Unless you opt in to further communications, we will only use contact information you provide to get in touch about the walk.
This is a circular walk.
The start time is when we aim to start walking and the finish time is an estimate.
Walks are graded Easy, Leisurely, Moderate or Strenuous in increasing order of difficulty. Please read the walk description to check it is within your abilities and contact the group if you are unsure.
Please:
- DO NOT book onto a walk unless you are pretty sure you will be able to make it.
- UPDATE YOUR RSVP. We understand ‘life happens’ so if you need to change your RSVP please do this at least 24 hours before the walk and before booking closes to enable someone else to take your place.
- DON’T NO-SHOW on the day unless it is absolutely unavoidable (we do understand ‘life happens’) because it prevents others from enjoying a walk if it is fully booked.
- *TAKE NOTE that if you no-show three times, without extenuating circumstances, we will decline further bookings from you for a period of six weeks.*
- DO car-share or use public transport if possible. To offer a lift or ask for one from a fellow walker, please use the Meetup event page.
- BRING a packed lunch/snacks and drinks, appropriate clothing for the conditions and optionally a basic first aid kit.
- FOLLOW NHS guidelines and do not attend the walk if you are unwell.
