Overview

This long walk passes the memorials to ‘Black Jock’ Armstrong, a notorious Border Reiver, to Steve ‘Hizzy’ Hislop, a local motorcycle racer who died nearby and to Henry Scott Riddell a local minister and songwriter.  After looking at Black Jock's memorial, we are straight into a stiff climb along a quiet single track road, before it levels off a bit  as we reach Hizzy's memorial. On the valley bottom to our right is the fledgling River Teviot.  We then have a long straight section before a steep descent, crossing the Teviot and then turning off the road to head up Rowantree Hill.  From there we have a long high-level walk along Blackcleuch Rig before dropping down and crossing Hazelhope Burn, having a short walk along the road before crossing fields and heading to the final memorial. We then descend to a track and have a shortish journey back to the start along quiet roads.
