A moderate 10.5 mile walk taking in the above villages, the walk is through nice countryside, which is a surprise given the industrial heritage of the area. Starting from the carpark at Phoenix Park, Thurnscoe we walk across what was the pit tip, then it's through fields and woodland to Hooton Pagnell with coffee break at the church. Then across fields, a short road section and past Hampole Wood to Frickley. Following Frickley Lane to the the base of the pit tip at South Emsall we follow a footpath which takes us under the railway line, then it's through fields to Wink House and Clayton. From Clayton we take the Barnsley Boundary walk back to the railway line, which we follow to Thurnscoe and the start point.
During the prewalk in late November, the footpath from Hooton Pagnell after coffee was still planted with sugar beet and was dangerous underfoot. This crop should be harvested by the time of the walk, if not we will have to divert via the road. Parts of the walk were very wet but hopefully will have dried out by the time we do the walk. No pub stop or toilets at the start or during the walk. Walk is suitable for dogs. A couple of difficult stiles to negotiate. Car park is not massive, quite a few dog walkers when i did the prewalk, car sharing is therefore advised and we may have to park so we block each other in. Worst case scenario we can park on the road.
