Two Parks in One - Elba and Lambton
Elba Park is an award-winning, 52 hectare green-space transformed from an industrial coal mining site into a thriving park.
From the park place we follow the heritage trail circular, where there are many artworks which honour the mining heritage of the area. Its difficult to believe that this beautiful green community space was once a huge pit with an abundance of railway sidings.
On completion we then head a short distance along public rights of way to reach the Jewel in the Crown in our local area, Lambton Park. On entry we head down through fields of sheep (with babies) and through attractive woods towards the river and then turn west towards New Bridge. Along this path there is an abundance of different wildflowers. Heading towards Lamb Bridge we then get sight of Lambton Castle which stands proudly on the opposite side of the river. This particular area is a photographers dream with the castle in the background and multiple colours of green and red from the mature trees. Along this area we also get our first glimpse of the many rhododendrons which are just starting to burst into bloom. We then head towards the racecourse (Yes CLS used to have a Racecourse) for a spot of lunch. We then start heading back along the Ridge Walk which affords us different views of the castle. Passing cattle fields (fenced) and more sheep, we then exit the park and follow the public right of way along avenues of trees and back to the start point. Distance is 8 miles.
