Helensburgh to Balloch is part 1 of the John Muir way. We will start from the Craigendoran train stop in order to avoid the tedious 2 miles along the A818 Luss road out of Helensburgh. The route takes us into the hills and along the Stoneymollen (Coffin) Road, then downhill into Balloch. On a clear day there are some lovely views looking back over to Helensburgh, Loch Lomond, Ben Lomond and beyond.
The paths are good if a little uneven over some short distances along the way and one part could be muddy after wet weather. Boots are therefore recommended for this one at this time of the year and the pace will be brisk to keep warm. The only toilet facilities outwith those on the trains are in Balloch.
Hopefully we can have lunch at the summit and if you wish there are good pubs and cafes close to Balloch train station for a warm up before getting the train back to Glasgow. Trains depart every 1/2 hour and the journey to Queen St takes about 45 mins.
