Overview

This middle section of the Union Canal is a long 15 miles starting at Linlithgow and finishing at Ratho Basin. From Ratho Basin it is another 1.5 miles/2.4km to the bus stop on the main road where we catch the Ciltylink 900 back to Glasgow, buses runs every 15 minutes.

The first few miles of the tow path are quiet and peaceful as we walk through farmland. We will have an early coffee stop at the Park Bistro - options for a cafe coffee or bring your own. At Winchburgh Junction construction work is underway, currently the tow path is open, should there be a diversion in place on the day of the this will add an extra to the walk.

We will stop for a picnic lunch at Bridge 40, then we join the Shale Trail for a few miles with views of the shale Bings and Niddry Castle.

We reach Broxburn after about 9.5 miles and the former shale houses at Holygate. A few miles further on we walk over the Avon Viaduct with spectacular views, for those who dare to look down, and a shortly afterwards to reach the Edinburgh International Climbing Arena with its friendly Refresh Cafe. After a restorative tea break its a to Ratho basin and the final leg to the bus stop on the A8.

To be sure of getting a seat on the bus you may want to purchase one in advance. The stop is called Newbridge East and the bus we are aiming to catch is at 17.00. Use this link to make your booking (£1 with a concession pass) https://www.citylink.co.uk/travelling-with-citylink/tickets/
