Walk from Somerton

West Mendip Walkers  moderate 6.7 mile circular walk starting Brunel Shopping Centre Somerton (TA11 6LW). The walk starts by turning left along West Street, and a walk through the historic town across the B3153 to follow a path under the railway line past the fishing lakes and cross the river Carey. Steep ascent towards the B3151 following the hedge line through fields towards a tarmac lane. Good views of Dundon Beacon, Lollover Hill and the Polden Hills. The walk continues past a pond and Walnut Cottage to follow footpath across fields heading towards Ham Lane. Short distance along a quiet road then follow a flagstone footpath with views of the church and Nature Reserve in the distance. (Option to visit the Nature Reserve which involves a steep climb and the need to retrace our steps). This is followed by a short section along a road to pick up a footpathcrossing a footbridge over a rhyne followed by an enclosed footpath and a tarmac lane crossing the river Cary to Etsome Farm. The last section of the walk is road walking generally fairly quiet but there is a steep hill heading back into Somerton and the carpark. There are a number of stiles and walking through farmland with livestock.
