Overview

This 8.5-mile circular walk from Wallingford is a shortened version of the pre-Bunkfest walk I have led before, taking in Shillingford Bridge and the Thames Path.

Advance booking is not required, but if you plan on attending this walk, please indicate this on Meetup if you can (see Website link), so others can see that there will be plenty of people going.

Walk details

We will head westwards out of Wallingford towards the village of Brightwell-cum-Sotwell, then follow a Roman road north towards the Thames. We’ll join the river upstream of Shillingford, before crossing Shillingford Bridge to head downstream along the Thames Path. The drink stop will be at the marina café at Benson. After the café we will have to follow the diversion through Crowmarsh Gifford to return to Wallingford, owing to the closure of Benson Weir.

Travel details

By public transport

Please travel to Wallingford on the X40 bus leaving Station Road (stop SB) in central Reading at 10.07am if coming by public transport. The walk leader intends to travel on this bus (although will probably board at one of the Caversham stops); if it is delayed the start of the walk will be as well. This bus is operated by Thames Travel, therefore it will not appear on the Reading Buses app.

By car

Pay and display parking is available in Wallingford town centre, however this is likely to be busy due to the festival. There is a park and ride service available from the Hithercroft Road Industrial Estate.

Notes

  • Please bring a packed lunch and a drink.
  • Please feel free to contact the leader with queries about the walk, or if you are delayed on the day.

Features

  • Refreshments available (Pub/cafe)
  • Accessible by public transport
