Overview

Start time: 10.00  (approx. finish 14.30 )

Mileage: 10.5

Walk Grade:   Leisurely

Walk Description:

A varied experience not to be missed, beginning in picturesque Wareham Forest and heading south through deciduous woodland and pasture into the streets of the historic town, where you will complete a circuit edging one of the two rivers that flirt peacefully with Wareham on their way into Poole harbour, as well as soaking up history as you trace the substantial walled fortifications originally built by Alfred the Great to combat Viking raiders, before a stop for lunch (us, not Alfred). There is also an opportunity to visit the most complete example of a Saxon church in Dorset, before tracking the meander of Wareham’s second river, then returning by another route along tracks through the Sika Trail sections of the forest, thick with pine trees and culminating in a pretty viewpoint location, shortly before reaching the start point.

Those who wish to may take refreshment afterwards at the Silent Woman pub nearby.

Note: our group walks quite briskly; while this route isn’t demanding of terrain or distance, if you have any concerns about fitness/capability please contact the walk leader in advance.

What you need to consider:

  • Bring packed lunch – there are brief drink/snack stops
  • Toilets - there are facilities in Wareham about an hour into the route and later if necessary.
  • Walking boots preferable as we are along river stretches that can be muddy but should be good at this time of year.
  • Always check the forecast and be prepared for anything (maybe sun lotion for once)!
  • Bring enough drink for the walk
  • Dogs – assistance dogs only please
