This is an out-and-back route on estate tracks and paths. Following river upstream; gentle ascents for 1½ miles, then leave track to ascend 170 m on narrow path, to rejoin track above valley step. Continue on fairly level track along valley side, as far as Sheiling of Sauchs if desired - up to approx 5 miles each way. ( What3Words hears.user.sprinter ; NO 396757). Can be shortened at any point - note that the quoted ten miles and total ascent is a maximum, and is only if we manage to get all the way to the Shieling. It is likely that we will turn back before that.
Can be muddy. Some shallow fords along hillside track. This walk will be taken at a gentle pace. As this is just before the opening of the grouse shooting season, any dogs MUST be kept on very short leads. On wild, empty, open heather moorland, with few discreet toileting opportunities.
