The walk starts from the National Trust for Scotland car park below the Grey Mare's Tail waterfall and climbs steeply by the side of the waterfall on a good path. It then continues along the path to Loch Skeen and then across rough, boggy, ground to climb the Donald, Lochcraig Head. The circular route continues across Donald Cleugh's Head and Firthhope Rig to White Coomb. The return route will cross the Tail Burn at a suitable place to return to the path
