Walking in and around Barnard Castle
We are a small and friendly group based around Barnard Castle in south Durham. Most of our members come from Teesdale but some members join us from further afield.
We are friendly and welcoming with a very relaxed approach. We always welcome new members.
We walk most weeks of the year, sometimes heading out for more than one a week. The walks are usually between 8 and 12 miles in length, but we also offer many shorter walks.
Our routes are very varied, taking in the valleys and the high moorlands and fells. We have so much wonderful walking on our doorstep but as well as the local dales, we often visit the Yorkshire Dales, North Yorkshire Moors, the Howgills – and we do also occasionally travel further afield.
The group has a long history, having been founded in 1966!

We live in a wonderful part of the world, and it is great to explore it with our group. Our walks are generally leisurely with two or three breaks. We often end the walk with well-earned refreshments, normally tea and cakes, at a local establishment.
Check out our website - www.barnardcastleramblers.org.uk – for our walks programme. This shows where to meet and how to contact the walk leader.
Also on our website - www.barnardcastleramblers.org.uk – you can also look at our Scrapbook for past walks – there are many photos and route maps giving a good overview of what our group gets up to!
You are warmly welcome to join us for a walk or two before becoming a member of the Ramblers. Just contact the walk leader in advance. If you have any queries please contact us. Otherwise to join us, click the ‘Join the Ramblers’ button above.
