What we do

Walk leaders

We always welcome new walk leaders and try to support them as much as possible either by running walk leader training courses or with general advice and support. Old hands are happy to share their knowledge and enthusiasm on planning and leading a walk so that others can develop new skills. Some of us are currently putting together a Walks Library that is intended to be a resource to help all new and old walk leaders devise walks for walk programmes.

Our books

We published the successful walking book “Walking around Exeter” to provide a range of walks in and around the city suitable for all walkers.

At the time of writing a second walking book is in the final stages of development. Although led by the editor, these books are group efforts relying on contributions from many people and then other volunteers checking/road testing the walks and helping to edit the walk description.

Footpaths

We have three footpath officers covering the greater Exeter and Mid-Devon areas. They liaise with relevant bodies to respond to any issues our members or others identify with rights of way, footpath access and maintenance. They respond to planning applications consultations when the applications impact on public footpaths and also contributed to the consultation on the Exeter Walking/Cycling initiative in 2023.

Some of our members are taking part in Don’t Lose Your Way, the Ramblers project to get lost paths recorded on the Definitive Map of public rights of ways.

At present we don’t carry out footpath maintenance ourselves although some of our members are working with Devon Area Ramblers and Devon County Council to begin doing so. Watch this space!
