The Ramblers is at the heart of walking but as Covid-19 spread around the world, the Ramblers suspended all group-led walks, volunteering and social activities in line with government guidelines and to protect the safety of our members, volunteers, staff and the public.
The Ramblers #RoamSweetHome campaign has helped keep up the morale of our wonderful community of walkers and inspired many to remain active – close to home – and connected to each other. Here are some lovely examples of what we all got up to in the last three months...
The Rambling spirit and sense of fun that has emerged during this period has been really inspiring. Scroll down to see some of the inventive ways our community has been continuing to experience the joy of walking – and staying happy and healthy during the lockdown.
In the era of social distancing we turned to social media to stay connected. We shared each other’s #RoamSweetHome adventures and met virtually for weekly walk and cake socials or on local group zoom calls and quizzes. Groups led virtual walks on social, many of you joined the live Great Ramblers Quiz, and our young members banded together to start a virtual social group of 120 young ramblers from Scotland to Cornwall!
From a hike up the stairs, a stroll in the garden or a wander to the local park, we put one foot in front of the other and found moments of joy in our daily #RoamSweetHome walks. Many of our members took on our step challenge, challenged themselves to take on virtual summits, hiking up Snowdonia on their step boxes or scaling Everest on their staircases!
Many of us explored local paths we had never noticed before and found new appreciation for our local green spaces. Using our imaginations, some of us created our own adventures at home, camping in our gardens or even in our living rooms!
Thank you for taking part in our #RoamSweetHome campaign during the lockdown and helping to keep each other's spirits and fitness up during this difficult time. Our Ramblers community has been amazing at staying strong together.
For now, as lockdown restrictions slowly ease, many of us are able to venture slightly further on our independent walks. However, the advice remains to limit your contact with others. Remember to stay safe and follow the Countryside Code (England and Wales) and Access Code (Scotland).
Please stay up to date with our guidance that is updated regularly: Ramblers.org.uk/Coronavirus

My favourite walk this week has been along the River Dart on the beautiful Sharpham estate, Totnes. Every time I go there are even more Devon violets and primroses, beautiful.

Adventure on the top, nap time on the bottom? 🤷♀️ Setting out on a world first socks-only Everest summit attempt today (aka Mum won’t let me wear shoes on her new carpet) via @playinthewilduk’s April Everest challenge. Works out about 144 reps of our stairs per day... 🥴. #roamsweethome @ramblersgb
