Length 15.7km / 9.7mi

Route developer: James Austin

Route checker: GEORGE REDMAYNE

Start location Glenridding Car Park, CA11 0PD
Route Summary Helvellyn is the third highest mountain in England, but some may argue it is the best known. Whilst the most famous route features a grade one scramble, this approach takes you up to the summit via Greenside and Keppel Cove.

Unless you are blessed with unusually calm and dry weather, or are very fit, I would say that you need 5 hours or more for the top of Helvellyn from the car park. NB about £8 to park all day, while if you come by bus (bus passes and day/week special deals) you escape this, but watch the time of the last bus carefully! I once had to walk across to Thirlmere to find a later bus. Do remember full winter gear from November to - well, maybe even May
