Painswick & Haresfield Beacon

Difficulty Moderate

Walking time 4 hours 30 minutes

Length 13.7km / 8.5mi

Route developer: GEOFF MULLETT

Route checker: Andy Page

Start location Stamages Lane Car Park, Painswick. GL6 6UU
Route Summary A delightful walk visiting unspoilt villages and passing through some of the best Cotswolds scenery. An undulating route gives you several dramatic views, while the snowdrops in early spring, followed by bluebells, makes this a great springtime walk.

My friend and I walked this excellent route today, taking 4 hours with many view-stops. I'd like to express our thanks to Geoff Mullett for preparing such a clear and comprehensive route guide; follow his instructions and you really can't get lost. I'll be researching further walks created by Geoff! I should mention there's one very short stretch towards the end, no more than 30 metres, that was impassable due to overgrown stingers and an overhanging hedge but we found an obvious and quick diversion and were back on the track within 2 minutes. Thanks Geoff - we really enjoyed it and refreshments at The Oak afterwards!

What a fantastic walk. The scenery changed constantly, from meadows to snickets, to lanes, woods, quarry and beacon. I have been wanting to complete this walk for a little while now, having failed to find the correct starting point on two occasions. A recce yesterday to make sure I was on the right track, and I was away. There is nothing mysterious about the car park's location , by the way. The confusion was all mine. It appears that car parking charges have been permanently suspended at Stamages Lane, which may be useful information. Thanks you for such thorough instructions!
