The largest of the ancient pinewoods this famous RSPB nature reserve and the adjacent Dell Woods owned by Scottish Natural Heritage supports one of the greatest examples of near natural forest in Britain. Conservation management is ongoing to help extend and repair parts of the woods that suffered damage in previous centuries.

Abernethy forest is a wonderful place for quiet enjoyment of the amazing pinewood wildlife. Visitor management is carefully designed to minimise disturbance to sensitive species whilst catering for all abilities of traveller. One of the most popular attractions is the Loch Garten Osprey centre with a variety of routes from here into mature forest. At Nethy Bridge an information centre provides a good starting point for the route into the old pines in Dell Woods.
