Knebworth & Datchworth Evening Walk (5 miles / 8km - Leisurely, Booking Required)

This walk is for up to 30 people, including the leader.

A mostly rural walk exploring the gentle rolling countryside east of Knebworth, with a chance of seeing sunset and moonrise.

From Knebworth railway station we’ll pass through the village and out between the East Coast Main Line railway and a wheatfield, heading south to Woolmer Green. Here we pick up a section of the Stevenage Outer Orbital Path (STOOP). On the edge of Woolmer Green we’ll see a curious outdoor gallery of hand-painted signs emblazoned with ‘Dad jokes’ which might make us smile or groan!

The STOOP then takes us through arable farmland and horse paddocks to the edge of Datchworth. After passing the little village church with its witch’s hat spire, we’ll leave the village (and the STOOP) along a quiet country lane, with wide views across the fields to our right.

We then walk gently downhill along a bridleway between open fields, looking towards Harwood Park and Stevenage. Paths lined with oak and other trees bring us to the edge of Stevenage; we’ll then dip briefly into the town, passing twice under the Hertford Loop railway line.

Returning through the fields to Knebworth, we might see the sun go down and moon come up (depending on our pace and the weather) before re-entering the village via its recreation ground. From here it’s just a few minutes’ walk back to our start point and the option of a post-walk drink at The Station pub.

Dogs are welcome on a lead.

Start:

Woolmer Green, Welwyn & Danesbury Fernery (8.5 miles / 14km - Moderate, Booking Required)

This walk is for up to 25 people, including the leader.

A moderate-grade walk through rolling countryside, woodland and historic parkland, including visits to Welwyn village, Danesbury Park and its beautiful fern garden, and a traditional country pub.

The route is mostly on rural paths and includes some moderate slopes.

Starting in the village of Woolmer Green just south of Knebworth, we’ll walk along ‘Twin Foxes’ (a street named after notorious poachers the Fox twins - look out for the identical busts at the entrance) then take a tree-lined bridleway towards Harmergreen Wood. Below our feet as we walk through the woods is the East Coast Main Line railway; we’ll pass two large ventilation shafts for the railway tunnels and might hear the strange sound of air blowing through the vents if trains travel through as we pass.

Emerging from Lockleys Wood into arable farmland, we’ll dip into a valley and out again along a path between the fields. From the brow of the hill we can spot the railway viaduct at Digswell behind us and the vineyard at Lockley Farm on the slopes below.

We then pass under the A1(M) and the Welwyn bypass on our way to old Welwyn. In the village we can see a cottage where Anne Van Gogh once lived and was visited by her brother Vincent; there is a bronze bust of the artist by the River Mimram. We’ll pause by the river for a tea break and a chance to use the community toilets at the nearby White Hart pub.

Next we walk through Singlers Marsh nature reserve (a flood plain for the Mimram) and past Fulling Mill, which was once one of many watermills along the river. Then we come to Danesbury Park, formerly the park of Danesbury House and now a nature reserve of grassland and mature trees. Here we find the restored Victorian Fernery, somewhat hidden away on the site of an old chalk pit: a wonderful garden of various ferns and many other plants, with an artificial rock grotto, a rustic bridge and several benches where we can sit and enjoy our packed lunch.

After lunch we’ll head through the hamlets of Pottersheath and Rableyheath, taking quiet country lanes to reach our pub stop at The Robin Hood & Little John. We can enjoy a drink in the large beer garden before the final mile and a half of our walk takes us back under the motorway and through the woods at Mardley Heath, following a part of the Stevenage Outer Orbital Path (STOOP) to return to Woolmer Green.

Dogs are welcome on a lead.

Start:

From Whitwell to the ruin of Minsden Chapel

Leaving Whitwell, we head north, walking through the deep shade of Hitch Wood to the chalk pit on its north-western corner. This pit, according to the information boards, contains fossils of ammonites and other organisms from when Hertfordshire lay under a warm sea. Further north, we come across the romantic ruin of Mindsen Chapel, which has watched over the valley containing Stevenage for many centuries.

Downhill is the Rusty Gun pub where we can stop for a while.

Heading back to Whitwell, we return by Hitch Wood, using a different path, and then go through Walk Wood, though we can make a short diversion to the impressive church at St Paul's Walden.

Returning to Whitwell via Water Hall Farm, we pass by Emily's Tea Room (329 reviews with a average of 4.6 stars!) where we should have high hopes about the quality of the cakes.

Hitchin Festival: Hitchin HOOP #4 & Lavender Farm (7.5 miles /12km - Leisurely)

Join us for the last in a series of short walks along the HOOP!

This walk, hosted by Stag Walkers for Hitchin Festival, will cover the northeast of the HOOP (Hitchin Outer Orbital Path), a waymarked route around the edge of Hitchin and through the surrounding countryside, which has its 15th anniversary this year. For those who are new to country walking or might prefer short routes, we’ve split the HOOP into four leisurely walks of around 5 to 7 miles. Each of these walks starts near Hitchin town centre and includes a variety of green space around the town and nearby. The route is partly on surfaced paths and partly on rural tracks, including some gentle hills.

After meeting outside the Queen Mother Theatre, we’ll walk on pavement and paths to the east side of Hitchin, passing through Purwell Meadows Local Nature Reserve. We’ll join the HOOP on the edge of town, where the route overlaps with the Letchworth Garden City Greenway. We’ll head uphill on a wooded path alongside Letchworth Golf Club, before crossing Hitchin Road and heading towards Letchworth's Westbury Estate.

As we skirt the edge of Letchworth we’ll have a wide view over farmland down to Hitchin and the surrounding countryside. We’ll also see Ickleford Barrow, an ancient burial mound now covered in trees. In 1816, archaeological excavations at this site found bronze spear heads and a copper blade.

We next pass through an area of Letchworth known as 'Tin Town' where prefab houses were built in haste using surplus metals from World War Two aircraft, which is likely to be demolished in the future. We will then pass Icknield Way Cemetery, where Letchworth's founder Ebenezer Howard is buried, and the Wilbury pub, which will be familiar to anyone who has watched the film ‘The World's End’.

Leaving Letchworth and its Greenway, we’ll deviate from the official route of the HOOP to walk alongside the world-famous lavender fields at Cadwell Farm. The lavender should be in full bloom at this time of year and we’ll pause here briefly to enjoy the scene and the scent.

After this, we’ll cross the East Coast Main Line railway via a reverberating bridge (listen for the echo as we go over), and will pass the pond known as Gerry’s Hole, opposite a mural which commemorates the former Hitchin to Bedford railway line. The HOOP then takes us into Ickleford, where we’ll break for packed lunch on the village’s Upper Green and will have an optional pub stop at The Plume of Feathers.

Following lunch, we’ll leave the HOOP and return through the edge of town, to our start point, passing through Bancroft Gardens along the way. After the walk, there will be an optional pub stop in town for those who’d like to join us for a sociable drink.

Letchworth and Willian Evening Walk (5 miles/8km - Leisurely, Booking Required)

This walk is for up to 25 people, including the leader.

A short walk with a mixture of town and farmland walking, with a few gentle slopes.

Starting at Letchworth's Mrs. Howard Hall, we will pass through the Ball Memorial Gardens, which has a statue of the Greek poet Sappho. After that, we will head out of town, passing the Central Methodist Church and St. Alban & St Henry VI Church, and several of the older Garden City houses, including one in an ornate Swiss chalet-like style.

Arriving at the village of Willian, we will pass All Saints' Church before heading out into the countryside and following a section of the Garden City Greenway, where we will get some good views across the fields. We then pass the statue of Telford Morton, a noted Letchworth resident, and complete a circuit of Willian Arboretum.

We will pass Willian Pond before heading back into Letchworth, passing St Christopher School, the Old Corner Post Office (unfortunately closed) and the UK's first roundabout, which famously made an appearance in the film, "The World's End" starring Simon Pegg and Nick Frost.

Returning to our start point via Broadway Gardens, we will pass Letchworth's independent cinema, which has a striking art deco style. Those who wish to can come for an optional post-walk drink in town.
