Start:

Alcester, The Arrow & Great Alne

An extended ramble through the attractive countryside round Alcester. Although quite long, the going is easy, on good paths and tracks and with no hills of note. Nice scenery, good variety and good views.

From the centre of Alcester, we follow the little River Arrow up to Coughton to meet a broad track, which we follow to New End and then carry on to reach Great Alne. From there we then continue, through Great Alne Mills, the hamlets of Walcote and Upton, past the attractive Haselor Church and then across fields and along tracks, back to Alcester.

There are few stiles and no steep or particularly slippery bits. We are likely to meet livestock (horses and cattle) in a couple of fields and there are a couple of busy roads to cross, but there is not much road walking. Suitable for well-behaved dogs on leads.

Bring refreshments. We will be stopping in Great Alne for a picnic lunch and will also have a couple of drinks stops on the way.

Note: this walk is the same as the one planned (ref EWF19) for the Evesham Walking Festival on 28th June. See weblink below for a map of the route.

Alcester

A classic country walk, going across fields and through varied woodlands, including Weethley and Cold Comfort Woods, and hopefully some more. There is some up and down, about 800 feet of ascent throughout the walk. At this time of year it should be a very pretty walk, with some good views, and perhaps a deer or two. There may be some mud, it depends on the weather over the next few days. There will be a few stiles.

Walking up to Kiftsgate

Start:

Mickleton & Hidcote Boyce

This short but lovely walk has great variety and some superb views for much of the way.

Starting from Mickleton, we climb steadily up through attractive parkland, to go past Kiftsgate and Hidcote Manor (NT), and then carry on up to reach a broad ridge beside some radio masts (the highest point in Worcestershire). From there we follow the ridge along a road for a little way and then take a downhill path, through the pretty hamlet of Hidcote Boyce and on, through some delightful beech woods, back to Mickleton.

Mostly on good paths and tracks, plus a bit of quiet road. One fairly long, but not difficult, climb. Lots of gates but just a couple of stiles. Slight possibility of meeting some livestock. Suitable for well-behaved dogs on leads. Bring refreshments for a snack break.

For those interested there will be the possibility of post walk refreshments at the nearby King's Arms pub.

Start:

Fish Hill, Seven Wells & Broadway Tower

A 7 mile walk around the Fish Hill and Broadway Tower area. It's in beautiful countryside with some lovely views. Starting from the Fish Hill picnic site, our route goes via Cross Hands, round a solar park, continues on past Seven Wells and then through woods to reach Broadway Tower and return back to our starting point.

Most of the walk is just undulating and not particularly hilly, although there is one tricky downhill section. There are 4 stiles, a couple of which are a bit awkward. We will need to walk beside the busy A46 for a short way and will also need to cross it three times (care!). There is one field that may have cows with calves in it. There are toilets available at the Broadway Tower picnic site and there are some at Fish Hill, but these may not be open.

Bring refreshments for a snack break.

Sambourne (+ pub lunch). BOOKING ESSENTIAL

WALK DESCRIPTION: Figure of eight walk. Morning 4.5 miles, afternoon 2 or 3 miles. Afternoon optional, pub lunch optional. If bringing a picnic, there are benches on the village green. Morning walk is on field paths, tracks and lanes, mostly easy walking, but could be muddy through the woodland at Coughton Park. No stiles. Afternoon may be altered due to blocked paths, but expected to be similar terrain to the morning. The Green Dragon is an 18th century pub with exposed beams and a cosy ambience, and was once run by Tony Hancock’s mother. A good quality food menu with regular pub fare is offered. For real ale enthusiasts it has 4 hand-pumps, but likely only to have two ales on at any one time.
