Overview

The walk will follow the disused railway line along to Crowndale Viaduct. A path then drops down to the canal, through an old tunnel and under the canal and up to the towpath.

We will then return to Tavistock alongside the canal, walking past historic Crowndale Farm. Look out for the kingfisher and other water birds.

Be aware that paths may be muddy and uneven and conditions can change, so wear appropriate footwear and comfortable clothing. A walking stick is useful too. Also consider bringing a drink and snack, should you require it, particularly for longer walks.

Boots are recommended as the railway cutting can be wet in one area.

One very steep short climb to the canal.

We like to have time for a cuppa afterwards, either in a local cafe or at the Tamar Valley Centre near Gunnislake – whichever is the most convenient.
