These days, ’modern life’ can mean that we’re a lot less active. With so many opportunities to watch TV or play computer games, and with so much convenience and fast food available, we don’t move about as much, or eat as well as we used to.

But it doesn’t have to be this way, which is why the Ramblers supports the society-wide Change4Life movement helping people eat well, move more and live longer.

We support Change4Life through our activities and projects to get people walking, and to provide good quality places to walk, for health, relaxation and transport in both cities and the countryside.

For most people doing more walking is the easiest way to get active. Walking is easy, free and accessible to nearly everyone, no matter what their physical abilities or health. It’s an easy activity to start slowly and build up gradually, and is flexible enough to fit into today’s busy lifestyles.

Walking is also a great family activity – you’ll be getting the kids more active and also spending quality time together.

Ways in which we help people get more active include...

  • Running over 500 volunteer-led walks a week across Britain through our local Groups, open to everyone on a trial basis. To make things easier, shorter walks (under 8km/5 miles) are highlighted on our online walk listings with the Walk4Life logo (Active Nation in Scotland).
  • Managing England’s network of short health walks, Walking for Health, in partnership with Macmillan Cancer Support.
  • Providing free online walking routes for beginners in our Ramblers Routes system.
  • Providing resources and information to help you get walking and keep walking.
