Thanks to support from the players of the People’s Postcode Lottery, we’re working with St John Ambulance, St Andrews and St John Cymru to provide first aid training for Ramblers volunteers.
“St John Ambulance is the nation’s leading first aid charity. Every year, more than 400,000 people learn how to save a life through our training programmes, including hundreds of thousands of young people.”
The half-day First Aid for Ramblers course will cover the basics, and the scenarios that you’re most likely to face on a group walk. Whether you are faced with cuts and grazes, broken bones, or something more serious – this course will give you the tools and confidence you need to react and manage the situation until help arrives.
All volunteers will benefit from attending, but particularly walk leaders, backmarkers, and anyone willing to volunteer as the nominated ‘first aider’ on a group walk. No prior knowledge or experience is necessary.
Over 200 training sessions took place between July - December 2019. Thank you to everyone who attended a session - we hope you enjoyed the training and found it useful.
We are collecting your feedback, and planning more training for the year ahead. Please check back for more details soon!

The training lasts three and a half hours in total. There will be a short break, with exact timings decided by the trainer on the day.
The course covers the essentials, and the scenarios you are most likely to encounter on a group walk. You will learn about the role of a first aider, and cover key skills such as how to assess and treat an unresponsive casualty, and how to perform CPR. Topics include: bone, muscle and joint injuries, angina, heart attacks, and emergencies resulting from the extremes of heat and cold. It is a practical course, with time to practice your new skills and ask questions.

The training is free for Ramblers volunteers, thanks to support from the players of the People’s Postcode Lottery. You can also claim back travel expenses to attend the training, by completing this travel expense claim form.
Please add your name to the waiting list on the individual booking page! If a place becomes available, we'll be in touch. We will also plan more training in areas with high demand, from October onwards.
The training is open to all Ramblers volunteers, and you are very welcome to attend training in a neighbouring area. If you would like to host a first aid training in your area from October onwards, please get in touch with the delivery team.
