What we're up to - Project update

We want to take the opportunity to add historic paths to the definitive map before the 2026 cut-off date - so that they can be walked for generations to come.

The Don’t Lose Your Way project, generously supported by Ramblers Holidays Charitable Trust, is exploring what additional support we can provide to the volunteers across England and Wales who carry out this important work. The project themes include:

• Volunteers: What additional guidance and training is required and how can we involve more people in restoring historic rights of way?
• Relationships: We would love to build a coalition to ensure that we can take this opportunity to create a better network before 2026.
• Archives: We are looking at how to provide better access to maps and other documentary evidence of historic paths.
• Information Sharing and IT: Exploring how we can improve information sharing to enable volunteers to effectively research and submit applications to save historic rights of way.

At the heart of the project is the Volunteer Advisory Board, a group of volunteers bringing their expertise and experience to ensure that we deliver tangible benefits to those working on the restoration of historic rights of way. You can find more about the work of the Volunteer Advisory Board here.
