My job as Chairman is a bit of a doddle. I simply arrange and minute our four committee meetings each year. They currently take place in the Bull Inn, West Malling and usually end up with live folk music accompaniment in the bar next door. If necessary we formulate responses to any potentially controversial items coming up on the Kent Area agendas a few days later.

I’m also one of the group’s three footpath secretaries. We comment on any proposed changes to the public rights of way network. I cover 15 of the borough’s 28 parishes, Nigel Ward covers 10 and Roy Barry covers three (he also covers 8 in Sevenoaks). It can be very interesting work and we often agree with the proposals if they make sense but if we don’t agree there are lots of ground rules to be considered because disagreements can often end up at public inquiries.
