Chairman and Walk Leader | North East Wilts Ramblers, Wiltshire Ramblers and Walking for Health
When I retired I was keen to expand my walking activities and to do some voluntary work, putting something back into the community. I didn't envisage doing the two things at the same time.
I joined the Ramblers and soon learned of the opportunities to lead walks for others which I found most rewarding. At the same time I became involved in the Swindon Walking for Health programme and after training volunteered to start my own group.
This quickly grew and now attracts an average of 85 walkers each week with a recent record of 102 walkers. Over 40 of my health walkers have now progressed to full Ramblers membership and walk regularly with my own Ramblers group.
What can be more rewarding than to see someone who may have been overweight, unfit and probably lonely now striding out as part of a new social group on a Ramblers walk. It has changed their life for the better and it has certainly done that for me too!
