Coastal access volunteer | Kent Ramblers
I was delighted when the law was passed for the England Coastal Path as I believe the coast should be enjoyed by everyone. I had always meant to walk the Kent coast, so when the Ramblers asked for a volunteer to find the best route for walkers I was happy to sign up. It gave me the motivation and discipline to get on with it.
By walking the entire mainland and Isle of Sheppey coastline (around 215 miles) I have been able to get a perspective on the difficulties faced. I have been able to pinpoint problem areas which could hopefully be improved with the new coastal path. I have taken photos and mapped out where I think the coast path could go. I have built up good relationships with Natural England and was delighted when I found they had taken full account of my suggestions.
The entire Kent coastline should be opened up to walkers by the end of the decade. I will feel proud when I can walk it and see the impact of my work on the ground.
