The group was formed in 1970. Records show that we had a pre-inaugural walk on 2 April 1970, offering transport from the golf club entrance at Axmouth to Lyme Regis, and walking back through the Undercliff. The walk was advertised in local papers, and around 65 people turned up! The first meeting took place on 4 June at the Church House, the Triangle, Sidmouth, when around 40 people attended, and a committee was elected. The inaugural walk took place in July; the 7 mile walk from Lime Kiln car park at Budleigh Salterton was described as 'a cliff and river walk' and included part of the coast path, White Bridge, Clamour Bridge and the River Otter.
By March 1971 we had 81 members, and an average of 24 on walks.
The founding was marked in March 2003, on the 2500th walk, by a repeat of the first walk. In June 2010 we celebrated our 40th year, and as well as walking the route again we invited members from the original walk to join us for some delicious celebratory cake. Some joined us on the walk afterwards as well.
By March 2020, our membership had risen to 450+ members, with an average of 15/16 on our 6 varied weekly walks.
