Paul Howland receives Commendation for Lost Paths Work

Hampshire Area Ramblers’ Footpath Secretary Alan Marlow (left) presents Paul Howland, Andover Ramblers’ Member (centre) with a commendation, in the presence of David Clark, Andover Ramblers’ Footpath Secretary, for his hard work in submitting claims for lost paths in Test Valley and the wider Hampshire countryside. Paul has so far submitted over 60 applications covering 110 separate rights of way. These are now with Hampshire County Council for processing. The work involves inspecting ancient routes and researching old maps and documentation in London and Winchester archives to unearth sufficient evidence to convince the Local Authority and Government inspectors that the way should be recorded as a public right of way. Lost paths are rights of way that should legally exist but have not been recorded on Hampshire County Council definitive map for many reasons.

 

There is a major Ramblers’ exercise taking place across the country to identify and claim these paths before they are lost forever on 1 Jan 2026 under the Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000 ( see https://www.ramblers.org.uk/get-involved/campaign-with-us/dont-lose-your-way.aspx ). After that date no further claims for lost paths can be made. There is therefore limited time to identify and save these lost paths before they are gone forever. Paul has led this campaign in Hampshire. He intends to continue his work right up to the 2026 deadline.
