For your Diary

We have now been offered an early bird deal for 2023 by HF Holidays. HF’s group offers are made before their walking holidays for 2023 go on general sale.  It’s difficult to think about making bookings almost a year ahead but early booking is the only way to be sure of getting the good supply of single rooms which our group needs.

The offer is for a 7 night stay at the HF house at Brecon starting on Friday 21 April 2023.  The base cost is £869.00 pp.  Some of you will already know Brecon – it is my favourite HF house.  There are guided walks on five days and one free day. There are up to three levels of walk available each walking day.  You can find out more about Brecon at this link

HF want a non-refundable deposit of £100 pp payable by 11 July.  It will be collected from participants at the beginning of July.  There are three grades of rooms available – Classic, Premium and Superior.  All rooms are en suite.  Premium and Superior rooms are either larger than Classic or have a better view, and have more luxurious mattresses and a larger television.  They cost £15 pp and £20 pp per night respectively.  You can find out more about the rooms at this link  You will see that groups are offered preferential rates for room upgrades.

To register your interest, please email me, David Cook, at  Please say in your message if:

•    you want a single room or a double room for two people.  If you want a single room please also say if you are prepared to share a twin room if there are not enough single rooms to go round

•    you want to upgrade your room to Premium or Superior

•    you are an HF member and, if so, give your membership number.  HF non-members pay a fee of £30 pp.

•    you have any special requirements as to rooms or diet.

I look forward to hearing from you.  If you have any questions, please send me an email, or ring or text me on 0794 821 2327.  In the event that the demand for places exceeds the supply, rooms will be allocated as first come, first served.  You will be asked to pay your deposits in early July in a further email.

Best wishes
David Cook

The Finca el Cerrillo is a small, friendly hotel run by a British couple.  It is in the Sierra Almijara in Andalucia and is about an hour’s drive from Malaga airport.

I have gone there for walking holidays most years since 2007.  There are 14 rooms which are plainly furnished but comfortable. They are mostly twin-bedded double rooms but can be booked for single occupancy.  The food is very good.  The ambience is more like staying in a large house with friends than a hotel.  You can find out more at and on Trip Advisor where you will find reviews and pictures.

The Finca offers its own guided walking holidays.  Their package includes pick-up and drop-off at Malaga airport, full board with a fixed menu for dinner, a choice of two guided walks each day with one rest day, and transport to and from the walks as needed.

What’s the walking like?  The Finca is 600m above sea level in hilly country and is at the foot of mountains going up to 2,000m.  There are two levels of guided walks each day: level 1 walks are for 3-4 hours and are easy-paced with ascents of about 300m; and level 2 walks are for 5-6 hours with ascents of up to 700m.

Dates, Price and Booking

There are two dates on offer – 29 October to 5 November 2022 and 12-19 November 2022.  The price is 850€ per person for either date.  Those of us who want a room to ourselves should note that there is no supplement for sole occupancy of a double room.

If you are interested in joining this trip, or if you have any questions, please email me at, text or ring me on 07948212327 or write to me at the address below.  I am a regular on Wednesday and Sunday walks so you can buttonhole me on one of them.  If you want to join, please say:

if you have a preference as to the two dates on offer, or is either date acceptable

if you want a room for two people or a room to yourself

if you have any dietary or other requirements which the hotel will need to know about

your email address and mobile or landline number so that I can acknowledge receipts and keep in touch.

A deposit of 150€ and a balance of 650€ per person are due in February 2022 and two months before the chosen start date respectively.

The payment to the hotel will necessarily be in euros.  To enable this, I will collect the sterling equivalent of the sums due at the prevailing exchange rate and use the money to pay the hotel in euros electronically.  You can pay me by cheque or electronic transfer.  Because it will difficult to ensure that the correct amount in euros has been paid to the hotel, there will likely need to be some balancing adjustment one way or the other at the end.  I am sorry if this all sounds a bit complicated!

Those of you good at sums will have spotted that the two payments mentioned add up to only 800€ when the holiday price is 850€.  The hotel has asked that you pay 50€ each in cash on arrival.  This is to cover the cash payments made by the guides over the week.

Other things

You will need to arrange and pay for your own flights to Malaga.   Transport between the airport and the hotel is included in the package.  The hotel will pick us up at Malaga airport if we arrive in time for their pick-up times of noon or 3.30pm.  Drop offs are arranged to arrive at Malaga by 9.00am and 1.00pm.

You will need to have European travel insurance.  You should note that some providers will charge more for cover if you are going to walk at quite modest altitudes so keep an eye open for that, given that some walks might approach 2,000m.

As some of you may remember, this trip was originally announced in February 2020 and was going to take place in March 2021.  It was postponed and eventually cancelled because of the restrictions caused by the Covid pandemic.

I look forward to hearing from you.
