We campaign for Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin Councils to recognise the importance of the Rights of Way network and allocate sufficient resources for it to be maintained. We also liaise with these Councils to determine priorities and ensure that the council undertakes its statutory duties to remove blockages and keep footpaths usable. Our current campaigning is listed on our home page.
We deal with specific footpath problems. Our Area Footpath Secretary leads a team of local footpath secretaries who look after our footpath network. Each local footpath secretary looks after one or more parishes and deals with all problems in those parishes.
Diversion applications are monitored so that should an application be made to divert or extinguish a right of way, we make sure that the result is not detrimental to walkers. Planning applications are also monitored to make sure that Rights of Way are not adversely affected. Where paths are obstructed or difficult to use, we lobby the Councils’ Rights of Way teams to deal with the problem and in important cases take legal action
Shropshire has a huge network of footpaths, and it is difficult for our small band of volunteers to monitor them all. If problems do not get reported, the Council thinks that no-one uses the path or that there are not any problems. Please, if you encounter a problem do report it to the council.
If you would like to contact our representative for a particular parish or area contact our Area Secretary.
Our Footpath News will give you information about abut on the status of known footpath problems in Shropshire. This may be useful if you are planning a walk.
We carry out voluntary maintenance Many of our members get involved with voluntary work such as clearing undergrowth and erecting signposts, stiles and footbridges. There are about 60 volunteer maintenance groups active in the County under the Council’s Parish Paths Partnership(P3) Group Scheme. To get involved with one of these or even to start your own, contact the Council’s P3 Co-ordinators
