Footpath Committee

Interested members of the group meet bi-monthly with RMBC Rights of Way officers to help preserve and protect our footpath network. The footpath committee decides on all cases, referred to it by Rotherham Council and Ramblers Central Office, involving the diversion or extinguishment of public rights of way. The committee considers and responds to these cases and also advises more generally on the condition and improvement of paths in the borough. Anyone wishing to attend Footpath Committee meetings should contact the Assistant Footpath Secretary.

Footpath problems in the Rotherham area

Please report any obstructions, ploughed and un-restored footpaths, missing/broken signposts /stiles etc. using the following options

• By Internet using www.rotherham.gov.uk/prow click on ‘report a right of way problem’ complete the online form and send
• By telephoning Rights of Way Team: 01709 822932
• By posting a report form to Streetpride Connect Service, RMBC, Riverside House, Main Street, Rotherham S60 1AE

Footpath Wardens

Across each district or parish in Rotherham we have members who volunteer to be footpath wardens. They walk the paths in their area to identify any problems and also assist the committee by checking if reported footpath issues have been resolved. New footpath wardens are always welcome.

Practical footpath maintenance work

Rotherham Metro, in partnership with RMBC and Rotherham Rambling Club, has developed a group of volunteers to undertake practical footpath maintenance work.  The group undertakes a range of work – installing/repairing gates, stiles and bridges, clearing overgrown paths, replacing waymarkers and finger posts, litter picking and any other task needed.  Staff from RMBC provide assistance and equipment and the group is covered by Ramblers Insurance.  The group meets monthly on a Thursday but volunteers do not have to attend each month which allows for holidays and other commitments. The committee wishes to thank the members of the footpath committee, our footpath maintenance volunteers and the footpath wardens who all work closely with RMBC Officers to address many varied issues during the year.

Thrybergh Country Park

The group recently carried out the preparation and improvements to footpaths in Thrybergh Country Park adjacent to the caravan park, also clearing part of the woodland and also planting hedgerows forming future access into a new play area field. Attached is a shot of the woodland path which the Metro working party (including Frank of course) have made over various different sessions at Thrybergh Country Park. It’s a pity we haven’t got a before and after shot, because we have transformed the area, but we thought you might like to see it as it is today with the daffodils which were planted in January.  Some of the ‘workers’ are also in shot!
