An important message from The Ramblers on the recent civil unrest

A message from Ross Maloney, Chief Executive

Over recent days we have all been confronted with appalling scenes of destructive and racially motivated civil unrest. This may feel very separate from the world of The Ramblers and walking, but we are acutely aware that the impact of this violence is very real for some of our members, volunteers, supporters, beneficiaries and staff.

The Ramblers is a charity that is committed to anti-racism and in line with our commitment it is right that we speak out to condemn the current wave of violence. We pride ourselves on the work we do with communities which helps build much needed cohesion. Our work counters the hate and unites communities visibly demonstrating that The Ramblers is, and will continue to be, an unrelenting force for good.

As volunteers we encourage you to take care of yourselves and fellow members. You may wish to contact, and show support for, those who may be worried about leaving home to join walks due to the ongoing unrest.

Volunteers and partners who organise walks for asylum seekers and refugees are particularly impacted. It is deeply troubling that those people you have been supporting are being directly attacked. These walks are key to The Ramblers commitment to pro-actively support communities who have the least access to walking in nature. Last night we witnessed demonstrations of unity across the country.  It will take so much more than this signal of support, but we really hope that this is the turning point that will enable you to begin to feel safe and able to resume these important walks.

Anyone in need of support with the events happening around us can access resources and advice from organisations such as the BBC and Mind

Thank you for all you are doing and your continued commitment to creating a healthier, more equitable and more inclusive society.

The Ramblers commitment to being an anti-racist organisation

We want everyone to feel welcome in our organisation and wherever they enjoy walking so we are committed to being an anti-racist organisation.

Why the Ramblers is committed to being an anti-racist organisation

Going for a walk is something many of us take for granted. But some people don’t feel they are welcome to enjoy walking.
