Nick Clegg walk

On Friday Ramblers Chief Executive Benedict Southworth joined local Ramblers members for a short walk in the Peak District with Sheffield MP and Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg.

During the walk the Liberal Democrat Leader heard how open access to moorland benefits local people, and learnt how walking can play a cost-effective way to tackle many challenges this country faces, from reducing physical inactivity and improving people’s mental health, to building cohesive neighbourhoods and supporting local economies.

Benedict also took the opportunity to thank Mr Clegg for his recent announcement on the England Coast Path, which committed the government to providing funding for the path and bringing forward the path’s completion date by ten years from 2030 to 2020.

After the walk Mr Clegg said: "It was great to meet up with members of the Ramblers and join them for a walk in some of our outstanding countryside.
“The Ramblers is made up of over 100,000 members and volunteers who do a great job making the case for walking and ensuring the countryside is accessible. I’m keen to work with them, both as a local MP and in Government, to promote walking as a great way to keep healthy and enjoy the outdoors.”
