Get outdoors, learn skills and meet new people!

Aged 18-26? The Ramblers’ Out There Award will kickstart your journey into the outdoors, while meeting other young walkers and learning new skills.

The Out There Award is designed by participants to be fun, FREE and inclusive. 

The two-day award is for everyone, whatever your background, experience, location or budget. 

In 2025, 100% of people who took part in the award said they would recommend the award to a friend!

 

The Out There Award is for you if you're interested in:

  • getting the skills you need to start exploring.
  • making new mates in your area.
  • improving your health through gentle walks.
  • spending time outdoors in a small, friendly group (max. 10 per group). 
     

What does the Out There Award involve?

The Out There Award is a two-day experience. 

Day one offers basic training in outdoor skills so you're able to plan and enjoy a new local walk. 

Day two will give you a chance to explore green spaces together on a group walk. 

Both days are led by qualified staff, who will bring the learning to life.

 

In 2025, 100% of people who took part in the award said they would recommend the award to a friend.

 

Everyone who completes the Out There Award gets: 

  • A free Ramblers starter pack worth £30 crammed full of navigation and safety essentials like a compass.
  • A year of Ramblers membership worth £43
  • A signed Out There Award certificate.

Day one: skills day

In a friendly and welcoming environment, we’ll cover the basic skills needed to start enjoying great days outdoors, safely! 

If you’ve never touched a map before or want to sharpen your skills, the Out There Award is the place for you. 

In 2025, 100% of people who completed the award said it increased their skills and knowledge!

You will learn:

  • How to be a self-sufficient walker 
  • How to safely plan a walk 
  • Your rights of way and access 
  • Outdoor equipment and clothing 
  • What food and drink to carry 
  • Core introductory navigation skills for using maps
  • Intro compass skills 
  • Staying safe when you're out and about

We provide all participants with a free starter pack full of useful outdoor goodies. Meeting points are near residential areas and close to public transport links, so you can attend without owning a car or specialist outdoor gear.

 

In 2025, 100% of people who completed the award said it increased their skills and knowledge!

 

Day two: Exploring day 

Day two is all about putting your new skills into practice while exploring an amazing local walk. 

We’ll continue to introduce new skills, so that at the end of the two days you’ll have a broad understanding of how to plan awesome walks and navigate around them!

You’ll have the equipment you need to carry on practicing these skills in the free pack.
