Lake District walking routes

Find walks in the Lake District. From long and short, easy to challenging, there are walks for everyone

From gentle lakeside strolls to challenging mountain ascents, the Lake District is a walker’s paradise with walks and hikes suitable for all levels. Below, you'll find hundreds of walks to choose from as well as all the information you’ll need to help you prepare. So whether you’re already a hardcore hiker or are looking to get out exploring for the first time, you’ll be able to find the perfect route for you.

But whatever route you choose, remember to check the weather forecast, bring appropriate clothing and gear, and let someone know your plans before embarking on any walk in the Lake District, especially the more challenging ones. And make sure to match up the difficulty of the walk with your fitness and level of experience. Safety should be a top priority when exploring this stunning part of the UK.

Leisurely routes: Walks for reasonably fit people with at least a little country walking experience. May include unsurfaced rural paths. Walking boots and warm, waterproof clothing are recommended.

Lake District weather

The weather in the Lake District can be quite variable and is influenced by its mountainous terrain and proximity to the sea. It is one of the wettest areas in the UK, with rainfall common throughout the year, so it's a good idea to be prepared for wet weather regardless of the season.

And because of its lakes and valleys, the Lake District is also prone to fog and mist, which can reduce visibility, particularly in the mornings and evenings. It's essential to take precautions if you're walking or hiking in such conditions.

Pack appropriate clothing and gear, especially if you plan to go on a more strenuous walk or hike. It's also a good idea to have a map and a compass, as visibility can change rapidly in the fells. If you're not experienced in navigating in mountainous terrain or inclement weather, consider heading out with a group.

Moderate routes: Walks for people with country walking experience and a good level of fitness. May include hills and rough country. Walking boots and warm, waterproof clothing are essential.

Lake District mountains

The Lake District is filled with some stunning mountain walks, all helping to contribute to its reputation as a paradise for lovers of the outdoors. And for more experienced walkers and those looking for a challenge, several of the Lake District mountains offer a more strenuous experience to really get the blood pumping.

Scafell Pike is the highest peak in England, standing at 978 meters (3,209 feet) above sea level. With several routes up and breathtaking views from its summit, this is a must for the experienced walker. Scafell, the country's second-highest mountain, is often climbed in conjunction with Scafell Pike.

Helvellyn is another popular peak and offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape, including Red Tarn. In our route library, you'll also find several walks that take you up Skiddaw, Coniston Old Man, Great Gable and Langdale Pikes, all mountains that offer testing, yet rewarding walks.

Strenuous routes: Walks for experienced country walkers with an above average fitness level. May include hills and rough country. Walking boots and warm waterproof clothing are essential.
